A Traditional Malaysian Approach to Mother-Centered Postpartum Care
When I first began studying postpartum traditions from around the world, I noticed something striking.
In many cultures, birth wasn't considered the end of the journey.
It was the beginning of a carefully protected season dedicated to caring for the mother.
In the United States, we often spend months preparing for labor but very little time preparing for postpartum. The focus quickly shifts to the baby, while mothers are expected to recover quietly in the background.
That isn't how postpartum has always been viewed.
Several years ago, I traveled to Malaysia to learn traditional postpartum practices directly from the women who have been preserving these traditions for generations. One of the most recognizable practices is Bengkung belly binding, but I quickly learned that it is only one piece of a much larger philosophy.
The goal isn't simply wrapping the abdomen.
The goal is caring for the mother.
What is Bengkung Belly Binding?
Bengkung belly binding is a traditional Malay postpartum practice that has been used for centuries following childbirth.
The bind provides gentle, even support around the abdomen, pelvis, and lower ribs during the weeks after birth, when a mother's body is undergoing tremendous change.
Unlike modern waist trainers or compression garments, Bengkung binding is not intended to reshape the body or help someone "bounce back."
Instead, it supports the body while it naturally transitions from pregnancy to postpartum.
Why is Belly Binding Used?
Pregnancy changes nearly every system in the body.
The uterus grows from the size of a pear to the size of a watermelon.
The abdominal wall stretches.
The ribs widen to accommodate the growing uterus.
The pelvis becomes more mobile under the influence of hormones like relaxin.
After birth, these tissues don't immediately return to their pre-pregnancy state. Recovery is gradual.
Traditional Malay postpartum care recognizes this transition and uses belly binding to gently support the body during this time.
Traditionally, Bengkung belly binding is believed to:
Support the uterus as it involutes (returns to its pre-pregnancy size)
Provide gentle compression over the uterus, encouraging mothers to move more mindfully during the early postpartum weeks
Support the abdomen while the abdominal muscles recover
Approximate the ribs and hips as the body gradually returns toward its non-pregnant alignment
Encourage upright posture during feeding and newborn care
Provide a feeling of stability and support while walking, standing, and lifting the baby
Serve as a physical reminder to slow down, rest, and allow the body time to recover
Many mothers describe the sensation as feeling held—a gentle embrace during a season that often feels physically and emotionally overwhelming.
More Than a Belly Wrap
One of the things that surprised me most during my training in Malaysia was that belly binding was never presented as a beauty treatment.
It wasn't about shrinking a waistline.
It wasn't about fitting back into pre-pregnancy clothes.
It wasn't about "getting your body back."
It was one component of a larger postpartum tradition centered on warmth, nourishment, rest, and caring for the mother.
Postpartum was treated as a sacred window of recovery—not something to rush through.
That perspective has stayed with me ever since.
Traditional Postpartum Rituals
Bengkung belly binding was traditionally paired with other postpartum practices designed to comfort and support new mothers.
Depending on the tradition and the family's preferences, these practices may include:
Warm herbal compresses
Herbal baths or showers
Herbal peri steaming when appropriate
Nutritious warming foods
Massage
Dedicated rest
Community support
Together, these rituals remind mothers that they are worthy of care, too.

A Different Way to Think About Postpartum
One of the greatest lessons I brought home from Malaysia wasn't simply how to wrap a belly.
It was a different philosophy of postpartum.
The weeks after birth are not something to "get through."
They are a season worthy of protection.
A season of slowing down.
A season of receiving care.
A season where the mother deserves just as much attention as the baby she brought into the world.
And perhaps that's the greatest gift Bengkung belly binding offers—not simply support for the body, but permission to honor the mother.
